Dow Ale

Dow Breweries · Montréal, Quebec, Canada

1790
Brewery est.

In 1966 the Quebec City brewery added cobalt sulfate to stabilise the head — bar detergent residue was killing the foam. Around twenty heavy drinkers died of heart failure, and the condition entered the medical literature as Quebec beer-drinkers' cardiomyopathy. Dow destroyed its entire Quebec City inventory to reassure the public, which convinced everyone of the opposite. The beer became la bière qui tue, and one of Canada's biggest brands never recovered.
