What the archive publishes

Almost everything here is text the archive wrote itself, built from sources it names on the page. Every factual claim carries the document behind it, whether that document is online or not — books and newspapers are cited by author, title and page, the same as anything with a link.

Facts themselves are not owned by anyone. Dates, addresses, proprietors, closures and production figures are recorded here as facts, in the archive’s own words, with the source named so a reader can check them.

What it deliberately does not publish

Images it cannot establish rights for. The archive currently hosts no photographs at all. Where an institution holds a relevant object or image, the record catalogues it — accession number, holding institution, credit line — and points at the institution rather than reproducing it. That approach needs nobody’s permission and sends anyone who wants the image to the people who actually hold it.

Material with an untraceable source. A portrait offered to the archive in 2026 was declined because its provenance stopped at a genealogy site with no known origin. The record notes that the image exists and where the trail ends, so the next researcher does not repeat the search. An unverifiable image is not evidence, and publishing one would sit badly on a site whose argument is that it checks things.

Whole copyrighted articles. Where a newspaper report matters, the archive states the facts in its own words and quotes a short excerpt, naming the publication and the date. Recent journalism is summarised, not reproduced.

Trademarks

Brewery names, logos and brands belong to their owners. They appear here to identify and describe the businesses this archive documents, which is what an archive is for. Nothing here is sold, and no affiliation or endorsement is implied by any brewery, past or present.

If you hold rights in something here

Write to info@tallysbeer.com and tell me which page, which material, and what you would like done. No particular format is required and you do not need a lawyer to start.

Material will be removed on request while any question is looked at, not after it is resolved. If you would rather it stayed up with a correction, a credit or a link to you instead, say so — that is usually the better outcome for both of us, and the archive will make the change and record it publicly.

The same address works for factual corrections, which are welcome and get the same treatment: fixed, logged, and credited to whoever found the error. Several institutions have already done exactly that, and their names are on the records they fixed.

What this page is not

It is not legal advice and it is not a claim to any particular legal defence. It is a statement of how the archive actually behaves: cite everything, host almost nothing, name the people who help, and remove anything a rights holder asks about while the question is open.
