Maltsters

Malting is the step that turns barley into something a brewery can use, and it is the least visible trade in beer. Breweries once did it themselves; industrial maltsters took the job over; almost nobody writes down which one supplied which.

These are supply records, not company records

Every maltster below is recorded as the other end of a brewery's ingredient relationship. Not one has an address, a founding date, a lifecycle or a source of its own, because the archive has no malthouse places and no malting companies — 0 and 0. We would rather show you that plainly than mint company records the evidence does not support. If you malt, or know who malted for a brewery here, the archive would like to hear from you.

Named maltsters

A named business supplying a named brewery. The supply record's own wording is printed beneath each one, because that wording is the evidence and it varies a great deal.

Malt recorded without a maltster

A region, a harvest or a brewery's own field, where the record says where the malt came from without naming who malted it. These are the rows most likely to resolve into a real maltster with a little more research.

The brewer-maltsters

Breweries whose registered name says they malted their own — the combined trade that was normal before industrial maltsters took it over, and which a few modern breweries have taken back. Drawn from the company name rather than from a malting record, because the name is the company describing its own trade.

From Field to Pint

Malting sits between the field and the brewhouse, so it is the join that makes the rest of the chain legible: barley growers on one side, hop growers and yeast & fermentation alongside. All four are unfinished, and each says so on its own page.

The next step here is not more rows — it is turning the named maltsters above into records with their own addresses, dates and evidence. How the archive decides what to publish.
