Every other brewery directory deletes an entry the moment it stops trading. That is why a closure is almost impossible to research a year later — the evidence gets removed by the people best placed to record it. So we keep them, labelled, with whatever we could establish about how they ended.

Thirteen years, from a 2011 homebrewing project to a permanent closure on 10 May 2026. It opened on University Boulevard in November 2013, in a former barbershop the founders built out themselves. The founder record here is deliberately incomplete: the indexed source names a Jason without preserving his surname, and Wayne Yarbrough joined later, so the archive holds a partial roster rather than completing it from guesswork. A missing surname is a better record than an invented one — which this collection has learned the hard way.

Fran Bolden and Jerrel Wynn ran a seafood restaurant and brewery at 220 Holmes Avenue NE — the former Below the Radar address, a room that has held a brewery for most of the past fifteen years. The owners announced the downtown location would close on 28 February 2026 after about three years, while they explored a future site. The archive closes the location and leaves the future exactly where they left it: an intention, not a fact.

The brewery's own website now reads: 'thank you for 11 years—we are closed as of 7/31/2026.' That is the closure, first-hand and dated to the day. The founding year is a different matter, and the archive declines to infer it from a rounded eleven years, so it is held as unknown. This record previously carried 2026 in the founded field — the closure year written into the wrong column — and that has been cleared rather than left standing as a brewery that opened and shut in the same July.

Three names in nine years: Broken Boundary Brewery, then Kalihi Beer from 2023, then Olohana Brewpub in Chinatown from 2025. Olohana ended business operations on 16 May 2026, with the owner saying the operation had been making Kalihi Beer for six years. The archive holds the whole sequence as one brewery under changing names, because that is what the owner's own account describes — one continuous operation, not three separate ones.

Phillips takes the brands, the brewery closes, effective 25 January 2026. An ordinary enough ending except for the company it keeps: Victoria lost Swans' brewhouse in 2024, Moon Under Water in 2025 and Lighthouse in 2026 — three consecutive years, three of the city's established names. The corporate and brand lineage here needs its own research pass and has not had one. What is settled is that the beer stops being made in Victoria.

A light goes out in Esquimalt. Lighthouse brewed from 1998 until January 2026, and then did the thing that almost never happens gracefully: handed its beers to a neighbour rather than letting them disappear. Phillips now brews Shipwreck and Race Rocks, so the liquid survives the company. That is the post-boom correction in one building.

Opened as a nano-brewery in June 2014 and grew into a microbrewery and lounge by May 2017 — the standard modern path, walked in three years. The owners announced a permanent closure in February 2026 and the final day was 28 February. It comes five weeks after Lighthouse shut in Victoria, which means British Columbia lost two established craft breweries inside the first two months of 2026.

Thirteen years, the longest run of Birmingham's modern breweries in this archive and one of the most recent endings anywhere in it. TrimTab's own store puts beer production from 2013; its own site states the taproom permanently closed on 4 July 2026. It completes three consecutive years of Birmingham losses — Ghost Train in 2024, Uproot in 2025, TrimTab in 2026 — the same pattern this archive recorded in Victoria, on the other side of the continent.

The Berkeley brewery stopped producing in May 2026 after Firestone Walker acquired the U.S. Trumer brand rights and moved Trumer Pils production to Paso Robles. The archive closes the Berkeley production entity and holds it separately from the continuing brand, because a brand surviving is not a brewery surviving — a distinction this collection has had to draw in a dozen places, and one that quietly inflates brewery counts wherever it is skipped.

At 650 Victoria Street from 2018 until new owners took over on 1 April 2025 and rebranded the venue as Embers Brewhouse. The record carries an instruction worth repeating out loud: do not assume Embers is brewing without separate evidence. A rebranded venue is not proof of a working brewery, and this archive counts breweries rather than signage.

The founding year is not established: this record previously carried 2025 in that field, which was the closure year written into the wrong column, and it is now held as unknown rather than left as a date that would have had the brewery opening and shutting three sites in the same season.

Manitoba's craft trailblazer, founded 2006, and the brewery every other one in this province followed. It closed in May 2025 — down from fourteen staff to two, killed by what one industry executive called death by a thousand cuts. Nothing about the decline was dramatic, which is exactly what makes it the defining story of the post-boom correction.

Family-run — brewmaster Clay Potter with Anne and Steve Potter — out of a predecessor operation at 350 Bay Street, then sold and rebranded as Brass Monkey across 2025 and 2026. The brewing, the building and some of the recipes carried on under the new owners, which is precisely the case where an archive has to decide whether a brewery still exists. This one says no. Moon Under Water is kept as its own historical identity rather than folded into its successor, because continuity of equipment is not continuity of a brewery.

The modern attempt to bring Berliner Weisse back, and it lasted nine years. Ulrike Genz founded Schneeeule in 2016 with Andreas Bogk, specialising in the city's own nearly-vanished style. Genz announced closure effective 30 September 2025 under economic pressure. In 2026 Schneeeule announced a new partner and an intended revival — the archive records the closure as fact and the revival as announced, because no resumed production site has been established. Count the Berliner Weisse breweries here: four, three of them gone before 1970, and the fourth a revival that has now closed too.

The archive holds it as a single brewery rather than splitting each taproom into its own entity, which is worth stating plainly: multi-site craft breweries are where brewery counts get inflated most easily, and a taproom is not a brewery.

A modern Trail brewery with no founding year established here. The Tailout owners purchased it in 2024, and the Trail Beer Refinery operation closed as Tailout moved into the space in 2025. The archive closes TBR and does not extend it into its successor — the same call made everywhere else in this collection where one brewery's room became another brewery's, which is a pattern it has now documented in a dozen cities.

Nate Darnell opened Uproot in the former Ghost Train and Cahaba space at 2616 Third Avenue South — the third brewery in that room. It poured its last glass on 6 July 2025, two years in, with the owner saying the brand might continue through contract brewing and pop-ups. The archive closes the brewery and leaves the brand exactly where the owner left it: possible, not established.

Taylor DeBoer and Patrick Small held their grand opening at 2616 Third Avenue South on 22 October 2016, and later moved to 3501 First Avenue South. Ghost Train closed temporarily in July 2024 and was then listed among Birmingham-metro brewery closures that September — a temporary closure that turned out not to be, which the archive records as it actually happened rather than tidying into one clean date. The Third Avenue room it started in did not stay empty: Cahaba followed, and then Uproot in 2023.

Another victim of CMBC; the historic Hampshire site was closed and sold, stripping the brand of its geographical identity.

English styles on Pembina Highway, at a moment when almost nobody else in the province was brewing them. The Winnipeg Free Press reported the shutdown in March 2024, opening the run of Manitoba closures that took Half Pints the following spring. The correction took the traditionalists as readily as the trend-chasers.

Brewing stopped on 31 August 2024. The pub, the hotel and the liquor store did not — and that distinction is the whole reason this record reads the way it does. Swans is still very much open as a business, while its own brewery pages still read as though beer is being made on site. The archive marks the brewery closed and says why, because a page nobody updated is the most common way a closed brewery stays open on the internet.

The brewery that started American craft beer, and then became its most public casualty. Fritz Maytag bought a failing Anchor in 1965 and revived Steam Beer — a genuinely American style, born of San Francisco brewing without refrigeration — decades before anyone used the word craft. Sapporo bought it in 2017. It closed in July 2023 after 127 years, workers attempted a co-operative buyout, and in May 2024 Chobani founder Hamdi Ulukaya bought it promising a revival. As of now it still has not reopened, though label approvals have been granted and there are signs of movement. The archive keeps it as closed until beer is actually pouring again.

Andina brought Colombian-inflected brewing to East Vancouver and closed in April 2023. The building outlived the brewery: three other labels reopened it two years later as a shared roof, which is increasingly how this industry recycles its own real estate.
- 2013 – 2023Chattahoochee Brewing Company (2013)Phenix City, Alabama, USA
A nano-brewpub that opened at 505 13th Street in February 2013, run by Derrell and Janice Winowich, sharing a name with an 1888 brewery in the same town and connected to it in no other way. The Brewers Association logged the public brewpub closing in December 2023 — but 2025 Emerald Coast Beer Festival records list Chattahoochee Brewing Company as a Phenix City nano brewery at a different address, 4115 Sandfort Road, pouring four beers. So the taproom is closed and the company may not be. The archive marks the brewpub closed and holds the production question open rather than resolving it in either direction.

Brewery history usually gets reduced to two dates. Opened. Closed. Cwrw Ogwen deserves better than that. This was a brewery created in Bethesda, Gwynedd — not by a drinks multinational or a distant fund, but by ten local volunteers, to bring beer production back to the Ogwen Valley for the first time in over a century. The company was incorporated on 3 February 2016 and CAMRA records it as a community venture whose shareholders did the brewing themselves. That distinction matters: this was not simply beer made in Bethesda, it was beer made by Bethesda. The first recorded brew came in April 2017, on a five-barrel plant at 5 Ogwen Terrace on the High Street. Before the first beer had officially launched, the brewery had reportedly secured an order to send bottles of its 3.9% Caradog to the United States — ten volunteers restoring a lost local industry and finding an overseas customer almost immediately. The beers carried the place with them: Caradog, Chwalfa, Tryfan, Ryc. Names that told drinkers where the beer belonged. By 2018 it was in the Good Beer Guide. There was a shop and a bar too. A community destination plan for Bethesda described a town with few evening options, empty commercial units, and visitors who drove on toward Bangor rather than stopping. In that setting a brewery bar is not a retail outlet. It is a reason to stay. This is where brewery statistics fail. Five barrels is nothing against an international brewer's output, and in a small town it can occupy an enormous cultural space — activity back on a High Street, Welsh names on bar counters, and the name of a slate valley on bottles crossing the Atlantic. In November 2020 Cwrw Ogwen was named in the House of Commons, in a debate on Small Breweries Relief, to illustrate both the value and the vulnerability of independent Welsh brewing. No evidence proves any of those pressures closed it. But the warning from Parliament now reads like part of the story. Brewing had ceased by early 2023, and there appears to be no public announcement explaining why. It would be wrong to blame tax, the pandemic, energy costs, volunteer exhaustion or poor sales without evidence, so this archive blames none of them. What can be established is that another brewer, Cwrw Tŷ Mo, moved into the premises during 2023 — Gwynedd Council approved its licence at 5 Rhes Ogwen that August, and a £12,912 Spark Fund grant helped it settle there permanently. It must be treated as a separate brewery: nothing shows it acquired Cwrw Ogwen's company, brands or recipes. But the line of continuity is real. The community brewery went. The brewing space survived. There is a final complication. As of 22 August 2026 Companies House still lists Cwrw Ogwen Cyf as active — with accounts overdue and a live proposal to strike it off. That is not an operating brewery. CAMRA marks it closed, the beers are gone, and the premises belong to somebody else. Which is precisely why a brewery needs more than one field marked active or closed: this one is at once a surviving company, a closed operation, a set of retired beers, and a predecessor at an address that still brews. Cwrw Ogwen never became an empire. It did something more intimate. Ten volunteers brought brewing back to Bethesda after a hundred years, named the beers for the mountains around them, put a bar on a struggling High Street, reached the Good Beer Guide, and sent their valley's name across the Atlantic. Then the beer stopped. What is still missing is the testimony: why production ended, what became of the plant, whether the shareholders formally wound down, whether any recipes survive. Anyone who knows is welcome to write. But this is not a story of failure. The company may vanish from the register and the original beers may never return — and the most important thing Cwrw Ogwen made was never a beer. It was a brewhouse in a town that had gone a century without one, and it is still there, still working, under somebody else's name.

Larry Lowe and Bradley 'Robo' Robison opened a science-forward brewery on 13 September 2019 — six months before the pandemic. It closed permanently on 31 July 2023, citing COVID's effects, supply-chain problems and changes in the beer industry. On the same day, in the same city, Salty Nut also closed for good. Two Huntsville breweries ending on one date is the kind of thing an archive should record plainly and not pretend to explain.

This record is thinner than it looks, and the archive should say so plainly. Its entire note is a bare URL to a BakersfieldNow story announcing the brewery's closure 'after over five years in business' — no extracted detail, no dates, nothing a reader could check without leaving. And the founded field reads 2023, which cannot be reconciled with a source describing more than five years of trading. Both problems are flagged rather than quietly harmonised. What the source itself establishes is a Bakersfield brewery on Resnik Court that closed after more than five years.

Chad Marchand and John Minton opened in December 2019 at 656 St. Louis Street and built the place around Mobile itself — local identity, live music, room for people to be in. Three and a half years later it closed in June 2023 amid a landlord and eviction dispute. Not a market failure and not a beer failure. A lease.

Brent Cole and Daniel Yant released their first beer around 2013, then moved into Yellowhammer's former brewery and bought much of its equipment — a brewery furnished by its predecessor. Straight to Ale purchased Salty Nut in 2020, and it closed permanently on 31 July 2023. Hold on to that date: Fractal Brewing Project, also in Huntsville, closed permanently on exactly the same day.

No corporate continuity is implied between the two, because none is documented.

The record is flagged in the archive as recovered and pending re-verification, and that is stated here rather than buried: it is held with less confidence than its neighbours, and showing which entries are shakier is more useful than presenting all of them as equally solid.

Cellarmaker officially took it over in 2022, keeping the production staff and the Berkeley space going. The archive preserves The Rare Barrel as a historically distinct predecessor rather than folding it into its acquirer — the people continued and the building continued, but the company did not, and those are three different facts that a single merged record would flatten into one.

Opened in December 2017 at 600 Government Street and sold in May 2021 to an out-of-state brewery, with Serda's own operations ending on 1 June. The site did not stop making beer — it became Oyster City Brewing's Mobile location. The archive closes Serda and does not extend it into its successor, because a brewery that is bought and rebranded is a different brewery, however little the building notices.

A Temecula production microbrewery founded in 2012, which announced on its own Instagram that it would close on 1 May 2021. Wiens Cellars continues as an operating winery — and the archive is explicit that winery survival is not brewery survival. Same name, same ground, different business, and the brewery is closed.

Deborah Pallett and Scott Crighton spent three and a half years bringing brewing back to Lethbridge, a city that once had it and lost it. Coulee is now closed — the second time Lethbridge has had to let go of a brewery.

A Black-owned Tuscaloosa brewery, opened in the autumn of 2015 by Jeremiah and Jeremy Donald and closed in the summer of 2018. Good Beer Hunting documented Jeremiah Donald as co-founder and brewmaster, and reported two things alongside each other: an unusually diverse customer mix, and difficulty accessing capital. Both belong in the record. Three years is a short entry in this archive, and the reasons behind this one are better documented than most.

An Exchange District brewpub that helped make downtown Winnipeg somewhere you would go for beer, with a full brewery on site rather than a borrowed tap list. The Winnipeg Free Press reported its closure in February 2018, under two years after it opened. The record previously carried no closing year at all; that report supplies it.

Thirty years almost to the month: opened 1 November 1987, closed August 2017. That makes it one of the earliest craft breweries in California and one of the longest-running. Alaro later took over the site, and the archive keeps it as a separate brewery rather than a continuation — occupying a building is not inheriting a company.

Winnipeg craft, a decade too early. Agassiz brewed in Winnipeg from 1998 until 2002. The brand carried on until 2010, but under contract elsewhere — so the brewery entity ends at 2002 rather than being stretched to cover a label somebody else was making. That distinction is the point of the record: four years of actual Winnipeg production, in a market that would not arrive for another ten.

The third brewery at 225 Dauphin Street. A property-development record has investors acquiring the three-storey microbrewery and restaurant in October 2006, Hurricane opening after renovations across 2006 and 2007, closing in January 2010, and the brewing equipment sold later that year. That is where the Dauphin Street run ends: fifteen years, three brewpubs and — by the documentation — the same brewer through all of them.

Cork had two stout breweries arguing with each other and with Dublin for two centuries. Beamish was once bigger than Guinness. The brewery is gone, the brand continues, and the city has one fewer thing to argue about.

It closed in 1998 — and what happened next is the point of the record: the brewery and the brand rights came apart, separated through the Vulcan Breweries and Little Star relationships, with Little Star taking the facility itself. A brewery can end while its beer goes on being made, and keeping those two things straight is why entity identity matters here.

The archive treats the whole sequence as one production operation under changing owners rather than a row per corporate entity, which is the difference between a brewery's life and its paperwork.

The Labatt's Manitoba Brewery Limited name does not appear until the 1958 list. That four-year gap between owning a brewery and renaming it is precisely the sort of thing that survives only in paperwork, and it is why the archive dates ownership and identity separately.

It was the last of Victoria's old brewing houses to go, closing three years after Victoria-Phoenix — and with it the city stopped brewing at scale for a generation.

The incorporation year is unknown. What the record does show plainly is a small brewery bought into a national group and renamed inside a decade.

Bundesarchiv corporate files survive for the company, which is why a brewery that stopped ninety-four years ago can be recorded this firmly.

Same walls, different company.

A serious industrial brewery — designed by August Maritzen, the architect whose plants stood in brewing cities across America — at North Water and Adams streets from 1891. Its history is really the history of Alabama's drinking laws: production stopped under prohibition, resumed when Mobile County voted itself wet in 1911, and stopped for good when statewide prohibition arrived in 1915. The company outlived the beer by moving into ice and cold storage, which is what a brewery with refrigeration could still sell when it could not sell beer.

Incorporated on 9 July 1891, with a near-contemporary newspaper reporting the masonry contract for the brewery foundations that August — a brewery documented from its footings up. By 1903 the veteran brewer William Meyer had briefly taken over the Sheffield Brewing & Ice Co. Operation, and a separately indexed Sheffield Brewing & Ice Co. Corporation was registered in 1905, most likely a reorganisation rather than a second physical brewery; the archive holds that lineage open rather than deciding it. Brewing is ended at 1909 because Alabama's statewide prohibition took effect on 1 January that year. That is the end of the beer, not necessarily the end of the company — later ice or non-alcoholic activity is explicitly not ruled out.

Isadore Newman, Arthur Isnard and A. Cammack took over the site previously associated with Birmingham Brewing and Morris Adler & Co. In 1897, and ran it until prohibition ended alcoholic beer in the state in 1908. The detail worth keeping: a secondary historic record says the plant struck natural gas in 1899 and used it at the brewery. In a city built on iron and coal, a brewery running on its own gas is entirely in character.

Seven years, and the weather got it as much as the law did. Founded in 1901 on what is now Telegraph Road, it took major damage in the 1906 hurricane and went on losing money afterwards; when statewide prohibition legislation came it exited and sold its equipment to a Georgia firm. That last detail is the one worth keeping — Alabama's prohibition did not destroy this plant, it exported it.

An Alabama corporation formed on 17 December 1888 for the business of a brewery, capitalised at $100,000 — serious money for a brewery on the Georgia line. Its 1889 advertisements place the plant firmly in Phenix City and sell pure lager beer made by German brewers with imported hops and malt, and city directories keep listing it there from 1891 to 1897. It did not close: the Encyclopedia of Alabama has the company crossing the river to Columbus, Georgia roughly twenty years after it started, so the 1908 date here is an Alabama-site endpoint rather than a proven end. Not to be confused with the Chattahoochee Brewing Company that opened in the same town in 2013, which has no connection to it whatsoever.

Birmingham's first brewery, and a family business in the most literal sense. An 1887 near-contemporary history of the city calls Philipp Schillinger senior proprietor of the 'Birmingham Brewery' and says he built the works in 1884 — with August as treasurer and city-trade manager, Louis as brewer, general manager and superintendent, and Erwin as secretary in charge of bottling. Four Schillingers, four jobs, one brewery. It ended in 1908, when state prohibition ended alcoholic beer in Alabama. A 2000 newspaper claim that the firm later changed its name is preserved here as a conflict rather than adopted, because one late report is not enough to redraw a lineage.

It closed in 1907. Three other records in this archive — Columbia, Yuengling Brothers and their predecessor J.R. Myers — end exactly where this one grows, which makes Lion the centre of the Kootenay brewing map rather than just another brewery on it.

Three Imperials, no connection between any of them, and a name generic enough to guarantee somebody eventually merges two of them by mistake.

Registered on 21 December 1885 by a syndicate of licensed victuallers to acquire the Crown Brewery — publicans buying their own supply, which was a common enough arrangement and rarely a durable one. The Brewery History Society says it was possibly acquired by Brain & Co. Around 1893; trading ceased in 1901 and the company was dissolved in 1904. The word 'possibly' belongs to the source, and the archive keeps it there rather than quietly promoting a maybe into a fact.

The name will stop anyone who knows American beer: Yuengling is the Pennsylvania brewery that calls itself the oldest in the United States. No connection between them is documented here, so none is asserted. A shared surname has caused enough trouble in this collection already.

Named for the island, not the city — Vancouver was not incorporated until 1886, three years after Thomas and Robert Carter opened this on the 500 block of Herald Street. The Victoria Historical Society records it taking medals for ale and porter at international exhibitions, which for a colonial brewery meant shipping beer far enough to be judged against Europe's. Eleven years, and one of the few Victoria breweries of its era with named brewers attached to it.

Four years, ended by a financial panic rather than by anything to do with beer. It stood at the 22nd Street and Avenue D–E site and failed during the Panic of 1893, along with thousands of other American businesses. The site outlived the company: the lineage there carried on to the Alabama Brewing Company in 1897. Not to be confused with the Birmingham Brewing Company of 1992 — an entirely separate business 103 years later, held here as its own record.

The brewery that lost the merger and won the building. Phoenix ran from 1868, became Phoenix Brewery Co. In 1891, and merged into Victoria Brewing and Ice in 1893 — the combined firm took the Victoria-Phoenix name and brewed until 1954. But the City of Victoria Archives identifies the Phoenix plant itself as the site later operated as Lucky Lager and then Labatt's. The name did not go with the independence, though — the merged firm traded as the Victoria-Phoenix Brewing Company, and the 1895 Williams' Official BC Directory lists it that way on page 304. So Phoenix lost its company in 1893 and kept its name for another sixty-one years, while the plant it left behind went on making beer for most of a century under other people's.

Winnipeg's brewing starts here, in the year the city itself was incorporated: Celestin Thomas built on Colony Creek in 1873. What follows is the most-traded brewery in Manitoba's history — Roy & Poulin, then Roy & Co., then Allaire & Thomas, then Cosgrove & Blackwood — before Patrick Shea and John McDonagh bought it in 1887 and made it stick. The Manitoba Historical Society records all of it, and the archive keeps those changes as lineage rather than separate breweries, because it was one brewery throughout. Follow it forward and it becomes Shea's, then Labatt's Manitoba. This creek-side brewhouse is the head of a line that ran for over a century.

Humboldt County's first brewery. The Clarke Historical Museum dates it to Union — the town later renamed Arcata — opening in 1857 and closing in 1859, and Humboldt Historian research identifies it as Gustave Stanislowsky's, constructed in late 1856 and opened that January. It was leased on to Theodore Wollweber and then to Hiram Wood, and its advertising sold lager and ale made by experienced European brewers, which on the Humboldt coast in 1857 was a real claim to be making. Two years — and the brewhouse outlived the business, because John Wagner opened the Arcata Brewery and Distillery in the same building the following year.
