The Closed Ledger

Every other brewery directory deletes an entry the moment it stops trading. That is why a closure is almost impossible to research a year later — the evidence gets removed by the people best placed to record it. So we keep them, labelled, with whatever we could establish about how they ended.

    A light goes out in Esquimalt. Lighthouse brewed from 1998 until January 2026, and then did the thing that almost never happens gracefully: handed its beers to a neighbour rather than letting them disappear. Phillips now brews Shipwreck and Race Rocks, so the liquid survives the company. That is the post-boom correction in one building.

It closed in May 2025 — down from fourteen staff to two, killed by what one industry executive called death by a thousand cuts. Nothing about the decline was dramatic, which is exactly what makes it the defining story of the post-boom correction.

    Anchor Brewing Co.

    The brewery that started American craft beer, and then became its most public casualty. Fritz Maytag bought a failing Anchor in 1965 and revived Steam Beer — a genuinely American style, born of San Francisco brewing without refrigeration — decades before anyone used the word craft. Sapporo bought it in 2017. It closed in July 2023 after 127 years, workers attempted a co-operative buyout, and in May 2024 Chobani founder Hamdi Ulukaya bought it promising a revival. As of now it still has not reopened, though label approvals have been granted and there are signs of movement. The archive keeps it as closed until beer is actually pouring again.

    Andina brought Colombian-inflected brewing to East Vancouver and closed in April 2023. The building outlived the brewery: three other labels reopened it two years later as a shared roof, which is increasingly how this industry recycles its own real estate.

    Winnipeg craft, a decade too early. Agassiz brewed in Winnipeg from 1998 until 2002. The brand carried on until 2010, but under contract elsewhere — so the brewery entity ends at 2002 rather than being stretched to cover a label somebody else was making. That distinction is the point of the record: four years of actual Winnipeg production, in a market that would not arrive for another ten.

    Cork had two stout breweries arguing with each other and with Dublin for two centuries. Beamish was once bigger than Guinness. The brewery is gone, the brand continues, and the city has one fewer thing to argue about.

    The most cautionary story in Canadian brewing, and it took eight weeks. Dow was Quebec's dominant beer for most of two centuries when, in 1966, Quebec City hospitals began admitting middle-aged men — heavy daily drinkers, most of them Dow drinkers — with a heart failure nobody recognised. Twenty to twenty-five died. The suspected cause was cobalt sulphate, added by brewers of the era to hold a head on the beer; Dow was reported to have used far more than anyone else. Causation was never conclusively proven and not every victim drank Dow. It did not matter. Dow destroyed its entire Quebec City inventory to reassure the public, the public read the dumping as a confession, and the beer became la bière qui tue — the beer that kills. The medical literature still calls the condition Quebec beer-drinkers' cardiomyopathy. The cases stopped when brewers stopped using cobalt. The brand never came back.

    Every American craft brewery traces back to this one, and it failed. McAuliffe could not raise money — banks did not lend to breweries that were not Anheuser-Busch — and he closed after six years. Ken Grossman and others learned from watching him do it. Six years of trading, and the entire industry that came after.

Kept on the record because a city's brewing history is not only the parts that survived.
