Brasserie de Jacques LeNeuf de la Potherie

Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Canada · Est. 1651

Tally's Take

Why this matters

The oldest brewery in North America recorded in this archive — seventeen years before Jean Talon's King's Brewery at Québec, forty-three before the Hudson's Bay Company's York Factory brewery, and a century and a third before Molson. Trois-Rivières Numérique, drawing on research by the Société de conservation et d'animation du patrimoine de Trois-Rivières, places Jacques LeNeuf de la Potherie's brewery in the town in 1651 — near the fort and the main gate, at what is now the corner of Notre-Dame Centre and Bonaventure. A brewery inside a palisaded settlement, seventeen years before Jean Talon built the King's Brewery at Québec. The address is still a street corner you can stand on.
