Why this matters
The smallest of the town's five, and the numbers are exact because the federal government collected them: Casper Fogeli sold 142 barrels in 1878 and 163 in 1879, against Dreyfuss's 833. The 1878 directory lists him as a Nevada City brewer on Main Street, and specialist brewery-history records preserve the U.S. Brewery trade name. Founding and closure dates are unresolved. A brewery this small leaves almost nothing behind except a tax return — which is exactly why the tax returns are worth reading.
