Why this matters
One line in an 1888 Columbus city directory is the whole of it: "Browneville Bavarian Brewery, Weilaner & Koenneker, proprs, Boyd nr Gayle, Browneville." A brewery, two proprietors, and a street corner. The town itself did not last much longer under that name — Browneville was renamed Phenix City by Alabama law the same year. Opening and closing dates, beer brands and everything else are unknown. And there is a tempting connection the archive deliberately does not make: the Chattahoochee Brewing Company, incorporated in the same town later that same year, lists a Carl Willaner and an E. Koenneker among its founders. Near-identical names, same place, same year — and no evidence linking them. Two spellings of a surname are not proof of one man.
