Tally's Take

Why this matters

Where the Dawes name starts. City of Montréal heritage records have Thomas Andrew Dawes working at Joseph Chapman's Montréal brewery from about 1817 and taking over the enterprise when Chapman died in 1836. Dawes went on to be one of the fourteen breweries consolidated into National Breweries in 1909, and one of the four fused into Dow Brewery Limited in 1952. Chapman's own founding year is unknown and stays unknown. Note what this means: Quebec's two greatest brewing names, Dawes and Dow, both begin as somebody else's employee.
