Golden Lion Brewing Company

Status: CLOSED. Golden Lion took title to the former Wittemann brewery in 1904. A March 1913 fire forced rebuilding across River Street. Local prohibition ended brewing on 1916-12-30; the historical account separately says the company folded in June 1916, so corporate-vs-operating dates are preserved rather than collapsed.    First advertisement, 11 April 1904

   "the company's first advertisement appearing on April 11th, 1904 in the Prince Albert Advocate" — Fred Baker, Thomas Baker and Gustave Wagner, at the Wittemann site on the north side of River Street (wittemann-brewery, TB-SW36VP64). Labels are known from 1904-1907 only.

2. 1913
   Fire, March 1913; rebuilt across River Street

   "until a fire in March, 1913 resulted in the need to rebuild the brewery. The new construction was on the south side of River Street on land now a part of the Riverside School grounds."

3. 1914
   Outdated

   "By 1914, the brewery's equipment was considered to be outdated, and sales and profits began to drop."

4. 1916
   The prohibition ballot — 30 December 1916

   "The local prohibition ballot in Prince Albert resulted in the brewery's last day of operation occurring on December 30, 1916. The Golden Lion company folded in June, 1916." The column's two dates are both kept; the photograph caption says the brewery "closed in December 1916".
