Tally's Take

Why this matters

Birmingham's first brewpub, and it existed because the law changed: Alabama's Brewpub Act passed in 1992 and Magic City opened on 10 March 1995, founded by Sam Casto and Michael Wajciechowski. It took the historic Weldon Martin Rubber building and put the brewing equipment behind an eighty-foot bar, which tells you exactly how it wanted to be read — the brewing was the show, not the back room. It closed in June 2000, five years and three months later.
