The archive is still digging. That is a gap in the research, not a finding of independence.

Timeline

  1. 1898
    Licensed 3 December 1898

Frank Hartinger and Leutfried Portmann's brewery on the Elkhorn mineral claim outside Greenwood's limits received its inland revenue licence on 3 December 1898 and brewed the next week — a 20×44 brewhouse and a 34×36 cellar and ice-house, about fifteen barrels a day. Hartinger was gone by October 1899; the Portmann brothers, Leutfried and Anton, ran it to 1906 (Beautiful Greenwood, from the Boundary Creek Times).

  2. 1906
    Docksteader

    J. B. Docksteader owned it from 1906: "The quality of the product ranks with the best" (Boundary Creek Times, 31 May 1907).

  3. 1908
    Burned

Destroyed by fire on 24 April 1908 — a $30,000 loss against $5,000 of insurance; the Phoenix Brewing Co. took its trade, and it did not reopen. Whether anything of the building survives: UNKNOWN. A Greenwood Museum photograph, 'Elkhorn Brewery with Portmann family' (1898), exists at arcabc.ca.
