Charles W. Gelbke Brewery

The earliest verified brewery in Mobile, and a working illustration of what a brewery was in 1865: Charles Gelbke ran his on Springhill Avenue near Broad Street with his residence and his saloon alongside it. Brew it at the back, live above it, sell it out the front. By 1869 the sources describe a lager beer saloon on Royal Street instead. The closing date of the brewery itself is unknown and stays unknown.
