Summary
Type: Joseph Anton Kern acquired the former fortification ground in 1842 and built the Schanzenberg brewery at Schönberggasse. Brewing began in 1843. The complex included malt kiln, brewhouse, fermenting and storage cellars; a fire destroyed the western wing in 1851. Kern gave up brewing and had himself removed from the commercial register on 11 August 1852. Status: CLOSED — Brewing ended 1852. Resolves held claim HOC-0528 ("FOUNDER / OWNER"). Kern, from Wangen in Württemberg, built the brewery on Schönberggasse in Oberstrass in the summer of 1842 and established Brauerei Schanzenberg in 1843; he gave it up in 1852, selling the villa and outbuildings to textile magnate Heinrich Kunz (succession lead).
