Tally's Take

Why this matters

California Pass 187. Historical county records document Colusa Brewery being transferred to H. C. Stillinger & Co. in 1877 for $13,000. The contemporary 1880 national brewer survey lists 'Kammerer, G. & Co.' at Colusa with 800 barrels sold in 1878 and 884 in 1879, directly measuring brewery output. Pacific Coast directory material lists G. Kammerer as proprietor of Colusa Brewery and Kammerer & Co. as brewers; an 1891 county history says the brewery was started about 1870 and for many years under G. Kammerer supplied much of the local demand. The 1888 California state gazetteer later lists Mrs. Margaret Kemmerer as proprietor. Exact founding, Stillinger-to-Kammerer transfer mechanics, family relationship/spelling between Kammerer and Kemmerer, and final closure remain unresolved.
