Johann Bauman was born in Germany on 2 December 1833, came to America at nineteen, spent time in Milltown New Jersey, and left for California via Panama in early 1856 — heading straight for the southern mines. He panned for gold at Columbia first. In 1861 he leased Sonora's Philadelphia Brewery and ran it four years, and in 1866 he bought a site and built the Sonora Brewery, which he owned until he died. Somewhere along the way he became John Bowman, which is how most of the record carries him; anglicising a German name was ordinary practice for immigrants who wanted to be taken as locals. His brewery made perhaps two thousand barrels a year and was famous, in the language of the time, for turning out the finest porter in the west. He was offered substantial money for the recipe more than once and refused every time — then, about a year before he died, told it to his son George. The recipe passed and the trade did not. George was running the brewery at the time, but he is never listed as a brewer again — when he died in 1934 the paper called him a retired Sonora grocer, and mentioned his father only as one of the first brewers in the county. The finest porter in the west has no recorded last batch.

Behind the beer
Born in Germany on 2 December 1833, he emigrated at nineteen, worked as a placer miner at Columbia, leased the Philadelphia Brewery in 1861 and built the Sonora Brewery in 1866, running it until his death. Anglicised his name to John Bowman, which is how much of the record carries him.
Son of the founder, and given the brewery's porter recipe about a year before his father's death, by which time he was already running the brewery. He did not carry the trade on: he is never again listed as a brewer, and his own obituary in the Stockton Record of 14 March 1934 calls him a retired Sonora grocer, dead at 61. Recorded variously as George T., George Tammay and George Tammady Bauman.

Founded 1866. A period biographical sketch supplied by the Tuolumne County Historical Society states that John Bauman "purchased a site and had built the Sonora brewery" that year. This corrects the archive's earlier reading, which took him to have bought an existing brewery and therefore held the founding year as unknown.

George T. Bauman did not continue the brewery after his father's death. The Tuolumne County Historical Society traced his later life and found him never again recorded as a brewer; his obituary in the Stockton Record of 14 March 1934 describes him as a retired Sonora grocer, aged 61. The brewery's closing year remains unestablished, but it did not pass to the son as a going concern.
