Black Paws Brewing Company
Devils Lake, USA · Est. 2022
From the record
What we have established
Devils Lake's modern craft brewery, opened 8 July 2022 at 424 4th St NE; founder and owner Jeb Oehlke, legal entity Black Paws Brewing Company LLC per later state alcohol records. VENUE OPENING IS NOT FIRST HOUSE POUR. On 8 July the first in-house beers were still fermenting or awaiting kegging, so the taproom initially served regional and national brands; the date the first Black Paws house beer was actually poured is UNKNOWN, and the complete opening lineup is PARTIAL RESOLUTION. Oehlke's brewing traces to joining the Muddy River Mashers homebrew club in Bismarck in 2010 and his first five-gallon batch, a Black Cherry Stout, in early 2011 - a homebrew club to professional brewery lineage. The brewery's name and identity come from Oehlke family Newfoundland dogs that took part in regional search-and-rescue work; that is a cultural origin story and not ownership evidence. In 2025 Reese Brothers Brewing Company applied to lease space and equipment from Black Paws; that is a shared-production arrangement and NOT an acquisition of Black Paws. Source: contemporary reporting, North Dakota Living, state alcohol records and Black Paws first-party, per North Dakota Pass 25.
