What we have established
Address: 1 Cate Street / offices later 24-26 Bow Street. Brewing began at the former Portsmouth Stocking Factory site around 1858 under M. Fisher & Co. With Marcellus Eldredge managing. Heman Eldredge bought the firm in 1870; it became H. Eldredge & Son and then Eldredge Brewing Company in 1875. Production rose from about 30,000 barrels in 1870 to nearly 93,000 by 1892, making it Portsmouth's second major industrial brewery after Frank Jones. Marcellus sold his interest to his brother H. Fisher Eldredge in 1891. Brewing stopped with state Prohibition in 1917; a post-Repeal comeback was attempted in 1933.
