What we have established
Virginia Brewery was built in 1863 by Thomas Smith. Henry S. Gilbert and Christian Richter purchased it in 1866; Gilbert later became sole proprietor. Brewing ended with Prohibition in 1919. A corporate charter re-established Gilbert Brewing Company in 1934, but continuous post-repeal brewing is not assumed.
