Why this matters
Founded at Jenlain in 1922, a village on the Belgian border, and the brewery most responsible for bière de garde surviving the twentieth century. Its Jenlain Ambrée became the style's reference point at a time when farmhouse keeping-beers had all but disappeared from northern France. The brand is now better known than the family name.
