Tally's Take

Why this matters

Luxembourg had more than a dozen breweries in the early 1950s and has three today, and this is what the consolidation produced. The lineage runs deeper than the company name suggests: Funck-Bricher was brewing in the Grund district of Luxembourg City from 1764, and Jean-Baptiste Bofferding founded his brewery at Bascharage in 1842. The two merged in 1975 to form Brasserie Nationale — owned jointly by the Bofferding and Lentz families, with all production pulled onto the Bascharage site — and the acquisition of Battin in 2004 finished the shape. It is now the country's market leader, and it stayed in family hands while its main rival went to AB InBev. The archive dates the record from 1764 because that is when the oldest constituent started brewing, not from the 1975 merger that named it.
