Tally's Take

Why this matters

Fernie Brewing is what happens when a family barn is allowed to keep growing for twenty years. Started by the Pask family in 2003 on their own farm, moved into a purpose-built plant on Highway 3 in 2007, and now pouring across four provinces while still family-owned — the rarest combination in Canadian beer, where most breweries this size have long since taken the cheque. It is the western anchor of the Alibi Run for a reason: Fernie was Emilio Picariello's base before Blairmore, the wet side of a provincial line that made a fortune for anyone willing to drive the Pass at night with the lights off.

The founding thesisThe Pask family, long-time Fernie residents, wanted to bring brewing back to a Rocky Mountain coal town — and started in the barn on their own family farm.
