Why this matters
Brewing in South Limburg since 1825 and still independent, which in Dutch brewing is rarer than the age. What sets it apart operationally is the sourcing — its ingredients come from farms within the region, which almost no brewery of its size attempts. And it is one of the last places keeping Mestreechs Aajt alive: a pre-lager Dutch oud bruin, dark and sweet-and-sour, made by blending young beer with aged beer. That style was the everyday drink of the Low Countries before lager arrived and has almost entirely disappeared. A brewery that keeps a nearly extinct style in production is doing something an archive can only describe.
