Tally's Take

Why this matters

Tadcaster's oldest brewery, at it since 1758, and the most stubbornly antique operation in Britain. Still ferments in Yorkshire squares — open stone vessels — still uses its own strain descended from the 19th century, still delivers locally by shire horse, and famously bans televisions, music and mobile phones in its pubs. It is not nostalgia as decoration. It is a company that decided at some point that it had already found the right way to do this.

Oatmeal Stout

ABV5.0%

Yorkshire's oldest brewery, still fermenting in slate Yorkshire Square vessels and still delivering locally by horse-drawn dray. Their oatmeal stout revived a style that had effectively died out.
