The character
Burton upon Trent is the most important brewing town in the world that most people have never visited. The gypsum-rich water made pale ale possible, Bass became the first registered trademark in Britain, and the town's water chemistry is still copied everywhere as Burtonisation. Marston's is here, and around it the Midlands runs family brewers, Victorian tower breweries and a Stoke porter named for a shipwreck.
