When Beer Reached 67.5% Alcohol
Snake Venom was advertised at 67.5%. Yeast cannot get anywhere near that, so the strength came from freezing — and the number came from the brewery.
At some point, extreme brewing becomes a philosophical argument. How strong can beer become before we stop thinking of it as beer?
Scottish brewery Brewmeister attracted worldwide attention with Snake Venom, advertised at an extraordinary 67.5% ABV.
Normal fermentation cannot easily reach anything close to that level, because alcohol eventually becomes toxic to the yeast producing it. So extreme-strength beers rely on concentration techniques, including freezing the beer and removing some of the frozen water. The principle has historical connections to styles such as eisbock.
But modern brewers turned the idea into an arms race. Higher alcohol. Bigger headlines. More extreme claims.
And eventually a fascinating question: if a beer becomes stronger than many spirits, what exactly makes it beer? The answer sits somewhere between brewing technique, regulation, tradition and culture.

A note on the number
67.5% is an advertised figure, not a verified one. Independent laboratory testing of Brewmeister's beers reported strengths well below what the labels claimed, and the company has since ceased trading. Brewmeister has no record in this archive for exactly that reason.
That is worth saying plainly, because it makes the story better rather than worse. The strength race was part brewing science and part publicity, and the second part is why the numbers on the bottles are the least reliable thing about it. An advertisement proves a brewery made a claim. It does not prove the claim.
