A Swiss immigrant named Joseph Villiger started brewing in Rio de Janeiro in 1888, trying to recreate the beers he missed from home. Nobody fully agrees on where the name came from — the company says it honours an English engineer named Joseph Bramah, though the story has never been nailed down cleanly, and Brazil's second most popular beer still shares its name with a Hindu god by pure, unresolved coincidence.
