Why this matters
The Cream of Manchester, and a lesson in what happens to a beer when the brewery goes. Boddingtons was a Manchester institution brewed at Strangeways from 1859, famous for a pale bitter so distinctive the city took it personally. Whitbread bought it, InBev inherited it, Strangeways closed in 2005, and production moved away from the city the marketing was entirely built on. The brand survived. The thing that made it local did not.
