The role
What they make
The malting arm of the French agricultural cooperative group InVivo, and since 15 November 2023 the largest maltster in the world. Its acquisition of United Malt Group for AU$1.5bn lifted annual capacity by half to 3.7 million tonnes across 41 facilities in 20 countries, and brought Canada Malting, Great Western Malting, Bairds Malt and Barrett Burston under one owner. Funding partners in Malteries Soufflet include KKR, Bpifrance and Crédit Agricole.

Why it matters
Most drinkers have never heard of the company that malts more of the world's barley than anyone else, which is exactly how consolidation usually works — it happens one tier back from the label.
