United Malt Group

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

01

The role

What they make

Created on 1 April 2020 when GrainCorp demerged its global malting business and listed it separately on the ASX, with global headquarters in Vancouver. At demerger it was the world's fourth-largest maltster, with about 1.25 million tonnes of capacity across 13 plants in Canada, the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom, operating through Canada Malting, Great Western Malting, Bairds Malt and Barrett Burston. It existed as an independent company for three years and seven months, until Malteries Soufflet completed its acquisition on 15 November 2023.

Tally's take

Why it matters

A company that was spun out to stand on its own and was bought before it had finished doing so. The archive keeps it because the brands underneath it still trade, and because the chain from GrainCorp to InVivo is unreadable without the link in the middle.
