The Nine Months That Took Two Calgary Breweries

One went to Sleeman. One went to Labatt. Both kept their names, their recipes and their taprooms — which is exactly why you would never notice.

In May 2019, Wild Rose Brewery was acquired by Sleeman Breweries. In January 2020, Banded Peak Brewing was acquired by Labatt. Two Calgary breweries, nine months apart, both bought by companies far larger than themselves.

Labatt announced the Banded Peak purchase on 30 January 2020. Terms were not disclosed. The reporting at the time was consistent on what would not change: the management team stayed, the beer formulas stayed, and the taproom off Dartmouth Road SE stayed open. Labatt's stated reason for buying was scale — more of the beer, moved to more of Alberta.

Banded Peak had opened in 2016 around an outdoors-and-Alberta-malt identity. Four years later it belonged to the Canadian arm of AB InBev, the largest brewing company on earth.

Wild Rose had gone first. Founded in 1996, one of the older independents in the province, sold to Sleeman in May 2019 — and Sleeman itself has been owned by Sapporo since 2006. So that beer now travels up two corporate levels before it reaches anyone who could be called an owner.

Neither brewery hid it. Neither had to. The cans look the same.

That is the whole reason this archive records ownership as a field rather than a footnote. A brewery that changes hands rarely changes shelf presence, and the people buying it are not required to tell you. Nine months, two breweries, one city — and nothing on the outside of either can told you a thing.

Tally's Take

Nobody lied to you. That is what makes it worth writing down — the record changed and the label did not.

What we checked

The acquisition dates, the non-disclosure of terms and the continuity of staff, recipes and taproom all come from contemporary reporting, listed below. The archive already carried both breweries as macro-owned; these are the transactions behind that.

The Wild Rose sale to Sleeman in May 2019 is recorded in the same reporting, which notes it as the earlier of the two. Sleeman's own ownership by Sapporo is longstanding and separately documented.
