Tally's take

The character

Deep mountain-town culture running right up against the Rockies. Nelson and the West Kootenays bring counterculture roots and certified-organic, fiercely independent brewing; Fernie, Golden and the East Kootenays bring alpine glacial water and ski-town soul. Expect robust winter warmers, malt-forward browns, clean alpine lagers and fruit beers made with huckleberries picked off the mountain passes. This is also where the Alibi Run crosses into Alberta.

Counts here are the length of this list, not an estimate. For why a brewery you know might be missing — closures, shared roofs, contract brands, ownership exclusions — see how we count.
