The Building Outlived the Brewery

A brewery is a company, and companies end. A brewery is also a building with drains in the floor, three-phase power and a licence that runs with the address, and buildings do not end so easily. The archive's site layer holds 2,416 addresses; 35 of them have held more than one brewery, and 66 breweries say in their own records that they brew in something that used to be something else.

One address, several breweries

765 Center Boulevard in Fairfax, California has brewed under three names since 1998 — Ross Valley, Iron Springs, and since 2024 Fairfax Brewing — and 225 Dauphin Street in Mobile under three between 1995 and 2010. The long one is Regina: the Regina Brewery at 1377 Hamilton Street brewed from 1907 to 2002, and Copperhead opened at the address in 2025. “Succession” below means each brewery arrived after the last one closed; “shared” means the building held two at once.

What stands there now

This is the question a site record exists to answer and the one the archive has answered least. Of 2,416 sites, 5 carry a building status or a note on what occupies the address today. The rule for the rest is strict: absent means unresearched. It never means demolished. A Lethbridge brewery that closed in 1990 and came down in 1991, and an Edmonton brewery whose buildings are municipally designated, are different kinds of history, and a blank cannot hold both.

Two thousand four hundred addresses is not a small number, and every one of them is a place a reader could stand. The archive knows which company brewed there and when. Whether the building is still there is the next question, and it is one a person with a phone and an afternoon can answer.

Breweries in borrowed buildings

The other direction: a building that was something else and became a brewery. Jopen brews in a Haarlem church and calls it the Jopenkerk; Docks Beers in a Grimsby church; Silversmith in a church in Virgil, Ontario. Lake of the Woods is in Kenora's old fire hall, Siboire in Sherbrooke's train depot, Garage Project in a Wellington petrol station, Brouwerij West in a WWII Navy warehouse, Open Air in Kobe's former elementary schools. What this page cannot tell you

  • Whether the building is still there — for 2,411 of 2,416 sites. Absent is unresearched, not demolished.
  • The chains it cannot see. Two records at one address only match when both carry the address in the site layer; most of the archive's 1,411 closed breweries have no site record yet, so their successors are invisible here.
  • The city page. Outside Canada a site is not yet linked to its Place, so these addresses render as text rather than as a map a reader could walk.

Method: addresses are matched on normalised street and city from the site layer; a chain lists every brewery recorded at one address in founding order; a borrowed building is a record whose note, Take or timeline says former, old, converted or repurposed beside a building type. Figures regenerate with every build.
